I like the idea of moving through life by making. So, I draw, I build, and I’ve also been attempting to write. It all comes from what I’ve lived, the people I know, and the ones I’ll meet along the way.

Documenting an architectural heritage.
Student Project
Photography + Editorial Design
2019

This exploratory project began as a photography and publication study during my undergraduate program at UID, Ahmedabad. I have a long-standing fascination with the neo-Gothic and neo-classical architecture of my hometown, particularly Mumbai’s Fort neighbourhood. Through this project, I wanted to pay homage and capture the characteristics of the oldest surviving buildings by documenting them through stories and visuals.

I wanted the project to highlight the area's different characteristics, so I chose to design a collection of print pieces. I chose to focus on the oldest buildings, some even dating back to the 1700s. I spent two weeks walking around in the area, capturing images and talking to residents who had been looking over these buildings for generations.

The collection included a booklet offering insights into the history of the selected buildings, along with a zine highlighting key architectural elements, from bay windows to Doric columns. I also included a map marking the locations of these landmarks, postcards featuring photographs of their facades, and posters created as visual reflections of the place.

I am grateful for rediscovering the ageing structures amidst the city’s constant hustle. This collection is a tribute to the rich history embedded– ‘Beyond the Walls’.

Acknowledgements: Arun for his mentorship; Mohammedali, Hitiksha, and Deepa for joining me on my photo walks; the residents of Fort, Mumbai; and my batchmates at Unitedworld Institute of Design for their support.
